Stefanos Tsitsipas had a slow start to the year, including a shock first-round exit to Alex Michelsen at the Australian Open. He rebounded impressively by winning his first ATP 500 title in Dubai.

The Greek got past Karen Khachanov, Matteo Berrettini and Tallon Griekspoor on his way to the final where he beat Felix Auger Aliassime 6-3 6-3, snapping a run of 10 straight finals defeats at that level.

The 26-year-old couldn’t keep it going, reaching the fourth round at Indian Wells where he was bested by Holger Rune and third round at Miami after a loss to Sebastian Korda. He had won three of the previous four tournaments in Monte-Carlo, reaching the quarter-finals where he lost 1-6 6-3 6-4 to Lorenzo Musetti.

Tsitsipas opened in Barcelona with a dominant 6-2 6-2 win over Reilly Opelka, saving all three break points. His serve was more impressive in the second round, not allowing a break point in a 7-6 6-4 victory over Sebastian Korda.

Arthur Fils improved at Indian Wells where he defeated Lorenzo Musetti on his way to the quarters, a narrowly loss to Daniil Medvedev. In Miami, he overcame Frances Tiafoe and Alexander Zverev before another quarter-final exit, to Jakub Mensik.

The 20-year-old continued on the clay in Monte-Carlo, beating Tallon Griekspoor and Andrey Rublev before a 3 sets loss to Carlos Alcaraz in the quarters, during which he led 3-1 in the final set.

Fils hasn’t given two Spanish opponents much chance in Barcelona, dispatching Pablo Carreño Busta 7-6 6-3 and Pedro Martínez 6-3 6-2, dropping serve just once.
