Stefanos Tsitsipas had a slow start to the year, beginning with a shock first-round exit to Alex Michelsen at the Australian Open. He rebounded impressively by winning his first ATP 500 title in Dubai.

The Greek got past Karen Khachanov, Matteo Berrettini and Tallon Griekspoor on his way to the final where he beat Felix Auger Aliassime 6-3 6-3, snapping a run of 10 straight finals defeats at that level.

The 26-year-old couldn’t keep it going, reaching the fourth round at Indian Wells where he was bested by Holger Rune and third round at Miami after a loss to Sebastian Korda. He started slow in Monte-Carlo where he had won three of the previous four tournaments, reaching the quarter-finals where he lost 1-6 6-3 6-4 to Lorenzo Musetti.

In Barcelona, Tsitsipas opened with a dominant 6-2 6-2 win over Reilly Opelka. He capitalised on 35 unforced errors from the American, saving all three break points.
