Francisco Cerundolo vs David Goffin Preview

Francisco Cerundolo is much younger, more naturally suited to clay, and in excellent form, so there’s no doubt that he starts as the firm favorite. The question, however, is whether he’ll win in straight sets or in three.

Considering David Goffin has already been involved in plenty of three-setters, the chances of him going for another one at this stage of his career, especially in back-to-back days, are on the lower side. So, I’m going with Cerundolo to win 2-0 as well.

  • ELO rank: 23
  • Season record: 19-8

Francisco Cerundolo Form

Francisco Cerundolo has been one of the most consistent and top-performing players on the main tour this year, and his confidence and form are really shining through right now. This has been reflected in his performances this week.

He bageled defending champion Jan-Lennard Struff in the first round and followed it up with another dominant showing in the second round against the out-of-form Alexander Shevchenko.

Conceding only seven games across two matches is a solid way to reach the quarterfinals in a tournament where he was eliminated by underdog Egor Gerasimov in the qualifying stages during his only previous visit in 2022.

Cerundolo has consistently made it to the quarterfinals this year, which has brought him closer to a top-20 ranking return.

Earlier this year, he reached five consecutive quarterfinals between ATP Buenos Aires and the Miami Masters, although he lost three of those matches, including two against Carlos Alcaraz in Indian Wells and Grigor Dimitrov in Miami.

Breaking this quarterfinal losing streak would also earn him his 20th win of the season, placing him among a select few players, including Carlos Alcaraz and Alex de Minaur, who have reached the 20-win milestone in 2025.

David Goffin Overview

  • Current rank: 52
  • Career high rank: 7
  • ELO rank: 59
  • Season record: 8-10
  • Season clay record: 3-1
  • Season quarterfinal record: 0-1
  • Form against top-50 players: 3-4 in 2025

David Goffin Form

David Goffin is, in a way, defying logic and expectations right now. He was well short of fitness at the start of the year, which affected his preparation for the new season and the results, leading to five consecutive losses.

However, things have changed drastically now. He’s become quite comfortable in grueling three-set battles and, more impressively, he’s finding ways to come out on top in these matches.

All of his last eight matches have gone to three sets, and he won five of them, including an impressive win over Carlos Alcaraz in Miami.

More recently, in the second round in Munich, he was bageled by Argentine clay-court specialist Mariano Nabone in the first set. But Goffin showed enough mental and physical resilience to bounce back from that setback and secure the win.

The former world No. 7 heads into this clash with a 0-2 record in the quarterfinals of ATP Munich, having failed at this stage in his last two appearances in 2015 and 2016.

Verdict

Francisco Cerundolo, in excellent form and with his natural clay-court game, is the clear favorite. The real question is whether he’ll win in straight sets or go the distance.

David Goffin has played numerous three-setters lately, and given his age, it’s unlikely he will go the distance in back-to-back days. I’m backing Cerundolo for a 2-0 win.
