Canadian Open Tennis History

The Canadian Open was first held in 1881 as a men’s only tournament and was staged at the Toronto Lawn Tennis Club. The women’s event was added to the schedule in 1892. The Canadian Open is the third-longest standing professional tennis tournament, behind only Wimbledon and the US Open.

Before 1968, the Canadian Open was known as the Canadian National Championship and between 1970 and 1989, the tournament was a constant fixture on the Grand Prix Tennis Tour - one of the predecessors to the ATP Tour.

Until 1979, the Canadian Open was played on clay courts before making the switch to the current hard courts. Both the men’s and women’s tournaments were held at the National Tennis Centre in Toronto until 1981, when the men’s event first moved to Montreal. The next year, the women’s event made its debut in Montreal and the two tournaments have been alternating ever since.

In 2004, the Canadian Open became part of the US Open series - a collection of North American hard court tournaments used as lead-up events to the US Open Grand Slam tournament in September.

In 2011, the men’s and women’s Canadian Opens were first held in the same week. It means now the scheduling is done a couple of hours apart to avoid any broadcasting conflicts.
