Bianca Andreescu vs Serena Williams Preview, Prediction, Betting Tips & Live Stream

The 2019 WTA Canadian Open final will see one of the future stars of women's tennis take on the greatest player of her generation on Sunday when Bianca Andreescu faces Serena Williams. Toronto native Andreescu will have huge support, while Williams appears determined to end her two-and-a-half year wait for a title. Williams has been installed as the favourite, with bookmakers pricing the American at 1.57 to win the final.

2019 WTA Canadian Open Bianca Andreescu Form

Nationality: Canada
Age: 19 (16/06/2000)
World Ranking: 27
Career Titles: 1
2019 Titles: 1
Canadian Open Best Result: First Round (2018)

Bianca Andreescu has put all of her battling qualities on display at the 2019 Canadian Open this week, brushing off her severe lack of match fitness to scrap her way to the final. The Canadian had not played a tournament since the French Open in May due to an injured shoulder and has had to work hard to reach the title match of her home tournament.

Andreescu started her tournament with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over fellow Canadian Eugenie Bouchard, and needed to again recover from losing the first set in the second round to beat Daria Kasatkina 5-7, 6-2, 7-5. In a clear sign that her game was improving, she then took out the fifth seed Kiki Bertens 6-1, 6-7, 6-4 in the third round, before eliminating third seed Karolina Pliskova 6-0, 2-6, 6-4 in the quarter-finals.

Andreescu had to wait until the semi-finals to secure her first straight sets win, but it was still a gruelling, hard-fought match against the in-form Sofia Kenin, beating the American 6-4, 7-6.

A fit and fresh Andreescu would provide a stern challenge to Serena Williams and might even be the slight favourite, but I fear that the amount of time spent on court (more than 11 hours), combined with her lengthy absence will put her at a severe disadvantage.

2019 WTA Canadian Open Serena Williams Form

Nationality: United States
Age: 37 (26/09/1981)
World Ranking: 10
Career Titles: 72
2019 Titles: 0
Canadian Open Best Result: Champion (2001, 2011, 2013)

Serena Williams is aiming to make it fourth time lucky at the 2019 Canadian Open after losing all three finals since returning to the WTA Tour following her time off to give birth. The American has played a selective schedule once again in 2019 as she continues to regain her fitness, although it is evident that she is stronger, sharper and fitter than in any time since her comeback.

In Toronto this week, Williams has been largely untroubled. She started in the second round - following a first round bye - with a routine 6-3, 6-3 win over Elise Mertens, and followed that up with a 7-5, 6-4 victory against Ekaterina Alexandrova.

Then came Williams' toughest assignment against Naomi Osaka, who had beaten her in their two previous meetings, including the infamous US Open final last year. Williams made no mistake this time, though, beating the second seed 6-3, 6-2.

Williams dropped her first set in the semi-finals against Marie Bouzkova, but after a slow start, the eighth seed fought back to win 1-6, 6-3, 6-3.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion has struggled to maintain her fitness throughout a tournament, resulting in the three final defeats she experienced in major finals. However, the Canadian Open is only a one-week event, so fatigue should not really be an issue.

Bianca Andreescu vs Serena Williams Key Stats

  • Bianca Andreescu was just one-year old when Serena Williams won her first Canadian Open title.
  • Andreescu has spent 11 hours and 16 minutes on court at the Canadian Open.
  • Williams has spent half of that time on court: just five hours and 55 minutes.

Serena Williams is the far fresher player and we are backing her to win the Canadian Open final against a Bianca Andreescu who looked visibly exhausted during her semi-final. Williams' wait for a 73rd singles title will end in Toronto.
