Western & Southern Open History

The Western & Southern Open originated as the Cincinnati Open in 1899 and was renamed the Tri-State Tennis Tournament in 1901, a name it kept until 1969. The first tournament was held at Avondale Athletic Club and was played on clay.

From 1903 to 1972 the tournament was primarily held at the Cincinnati Tennis Club. It was mostly played on clay until 1979 before moving to hard court.

The tournament came close to being dropped in 1974 but a last minute move to the Cincinnati Convention Centre saved it. For the first time since 1919 it was played indoors and without a women’s tournament.

The struggles of the Cincinatti Open started to ease in 1975 after it moved to Coney Island amusement park in Ohio. Paul M. Flory is largely credited with the tournament turnaround, taking over the reins of the tournament in 1975 and donating millions to of dollars to charity, specifically focused on youth hospitals and development.

In 1979 the Cincinnati Open moved to its current location in Mason where a permanent stadium was built. Two further stadiums were built later on and the Cincinnati Open became the only event outside of the four Grand Slams where there were three stadium courts – Centre Court, Grandstand Court and Court 3. In 2010 another stadium was built and was called Court 3 while the old Court 3 became Court 9.

The women’s tournament was reinstated in 1988 but only lasted one year. In 2004 it was again reinstated and has been present ever since. This happened after the Octagon Sports Agency bought the Croatian Bold Ladies Tournament and moved it to Cincinnati.

2011 was the first time the men’s and women’s tournament was held at the same time and became a joint tournament. It changed names regularly including the ATP Championships, the Western & Southern Financial Group took over the sponsorship in 2002 and has been the sponsor ever since.

The 2020 Western & Southern Open was the first ATP tournament since the Tour was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead of taking place in Cincinnati, Ohio, it was held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City, United States in order to reduce unnecessary player travel.
