European Open Tennis History

Antwerp previously held The European Community Championship, a professional tennis tournament held from 1982 until 1998 that was a special invitational/exhibition event organised outside the Grand Prix series.

Players could not earn any ATP ranking points until 1992 when the European Community Championship became part of the ATP Tour and switched from an indoor carpet surface to hard courts in 1997.

The European Community Championship attracted some of the best men's players in tennis including Ivan Lendl, John McEnroe, Miloslav Mečíř, Goran Ivanišević, Henri Leconte, Boris Becker, Pete Sampras, Michael Stich, Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski.

In October 2015 it was announced that the organisers of the Valencia Open had sold their tournament licence to Belgium. The first European Open took place in 2016 in Antwerp, Belgium, with the winner of the inaugural event being Richard Gasquet followed by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Kyle Edmund and Andy Murray.

The ATP European Open is currently the only ATP Tour tournament taking place in Belgium.
