Novak Djokovic’s incredible Grand Slam record and his ability to find a way out in these best-of-five matches make it risky to bet against him at this stage. But at the same time, this isn’t the Djokovic of old. His level has dropped noticeably, and so has his confidence. Backing him to go the distance against a younger, top player carries its own risks.

For me, the best approach here is to expect a tight contest with lots of games and possibly a five-setter. A small punt on Zverev to win 3-2 might be worth a shot too; because if it does go to a decider, I’m not sure Djokovic will have enough left in the tank to close it out.

Alexander Zverev looked in a bit of trouble early on in his round of 16 clash with Tallon Griekspoor, but the Dutchman couldn't keep up the intensity. His level dropped, and eventually, he had to retire while trailing 4-6, 0-3.

Zverev’s campaign so far has been fairly average. Nothing too exciting or at the level you'd expect from a top-four player. And now, up against Novak Djokovic, he’ll need to bring out every weapon he's got if he wants to avoid another underwhelming season in 2025.

It's been a rather disappointing year for the German. In six months, he’s only gone beyond the quarterfinals once. That dip in form cost him the world number two spot, which Carlos Alcaraz has now taken over.

That said, Zverev has still been one of the most reliable performers at the Grand Slams this year, probably second only to Jannik Sinner. He reached the final in Australia where Sinner beat him, and now he’s made it to the quarterfinals again at Roland Garros.

He’s also got a solid track record in Paris. This is his fifth quarterfinal in a row at the French Open, and let’s not forget, he was just a set away from beating Alcaraz and lifting the title here in 2024.

Novak Djokovic made light work of Cameron Norrie in the round of 16, cruising to a 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 win. That’s the fewest games he’s dropped in a match at this tournament so far.

He’s currently riding an eight-match winning streak; his best run in quite a while. That stretch includes winning his 100th tour-level title in Geneva two weeks ago, a massive milestone. He’s only the third player in history to reach that mark.

Djokovic hasn’t lost on the clay courts in Paris since his quarterfinal defeat to Rafael Nadal back in 2022. He went on to win the French Open in 2023, withdrew from the quarterfinals in 2024, and a few months later, claimed the gold medal at the Paris Olympics.

He hasn’t faced a top-10 player since the Australian Open in January. There, he beat Carlos Alcaraz in the quarters but had to retire against Alexander Zverev in the semis after losing the first set.

Verdict

Alexander Zverev v Novak Djokovic

Djokovic’s Slam pedigree is unmatched, but he’s clearly not at his peak anymore. His level and confidence have dipped, making a long battle against a top younger opponent a real test.

This one feels like it could go the distance. I’d lean toward a five-set match with value on Zverev edging it 3-2, especially if it comes down to stamina in the decider.
