Diego Schwartzman vs Jan-Lennard Struff Predictions

A semifinalist at the French Open in 2020, Diego Schwartzman had a poor clay-court season in 2021. He hasn’t dropped a set at Roland Garros so far but could well find himself shocked by the big-serving, powerful Jan-Lennard Struff, who beat Andrey Rublev in the first round and is playing great tennis.

  • Diego Schwartzman failed to win a match at 4 of the 5 European clay-court tournaments he played coming into the French Open
  • Diego Schwartzman has seen under 40.5 games in 6 of his last 7 Grand Slam matches
  • Diego Schwartzman is yet to beat a player ranked in the top 50 on European clay in 2021
  • Jan-Lennard Struff has won 2 of his last 4 matches against top-50 players on European clay
  • Jan-Lennard Struff has seen under 40.5 games in 4 of his last 5 Grand Slam matches
  • Jan-Lennard Struff has seen under 40.5 games in 9 of the 10 Grand Slam matches against top-10 opponents

Diego Schwartzman is 1-1 vs Jan-Lennard Struff.

Schwartzman beat Struff 6-3, 6-0 in their only clay-court meeting at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters in 2017. Struff beat Schwartzman 6-3, 7-6(8) on hard courts at the Davis Cup in 2019.

Diego Schwartzman Form

Diminutive Argentine Diego Schwartzman had a career-best clay season in 2020, defeating Rafael Nadal on his way to the final of the Rome Masters and going on to reach the semifinal of the French Open, beating Dominic Thiem on the way.

The slow, heavy conditions of that autumn French Open suited Schwartzman. But he has not had such success on European clay in 2021 despite winning a title in Buenos Aires.

So far at the French Open Schwartzman has not dropped a set. But he also has not faced very stiff opposition in Yen-Hsun Lu, Aljaz Bedene (struggling with a hand injury) and veteran Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Jan-Lennard Struff Form

Big-serving Jan-Lennard Struff caused one of the upsets of the tournament in the first round when he beat seventh seed Andrey Rublev, a win which shows how overwhelmingly effective Struff’s game can be.

Struff has faded physically in the past in long matches, but did not do so against Rublev, and went on to beat Facundo Bagnis and 18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets.

This is the second time Struff has made the last 16, having done so in 2019 when he beat Borna Coric and Denis Shapovalov before losing to Novak Djokovic in straight sets.

Struff’s win over Rublev was the first he has ever recorded over a top-10 player at a Grand Slam. With his current momentum, fitness, and the fact that his weapons off the ground dwarf Schwartzman’s, and the conditions in Paris, he has an excellent chance at another top-10 win.
