Elena Rybakina vs Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova Predictions

Elena Rybakina stunned Serena Williams in straight sets to reach her first Grand Slam quarterfinal and her big serve and forehand have her favoured to continue her run. However, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is much more experienced at this level and has won eight of her last nine matches, so is not to be discounted.

  • Elena Rybakina has not dropped a set so far at the French Open
  • Elena Rybakina has lost 3 of her last 8 matches against top-50 players
  • Elena Rybakina has seen over 19.5 games in 6 of her last 7 matches against top-50 players
  • Elena Rybakina has a losing record (18-21) against top-50 players
  • Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova has won 8 of her last 9 matches
  • Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova has won 3 of her last 4 matches by 4.5 games or more
  • Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova has seen over 19.5 games in 4 of her last 5 matches against top-50 players
  • Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova has seen over 21.5 games in 2 of her last 3 Grand Slam quarterfinals

This will be the first meeting between Elena Rybakina and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Elena Rybakina Form

Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina reached the final in four of the first five tournaments she played in 2020, beating some elite players. Then came the pandemic and the 21-year-old has struggled to regain her momentum – until now.

Rybakina steamed through straight-set victories over some undemanding opponents, beating Elsa Jacquemot, Nao Hibino and Elena Vesnina, before coming up against Serena Williams. On a poor day for the three-time champion, Rybakina dominated the match completely with her big serve, powerful forehand and ability to move the ball around.

Rybakina outperformed Williams in every statistical category in the 6-3, 7-5 win. Most impressively, she converted five of seven break points and hit 21 winners for just 13 unforced errors. However, there is no getting away from the fact that Williams frequently left the ball in convenient positions for Rybakina to hit.

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova Form

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova has now won eight of her past nine matches, following a semifinal run in Madrid which saw her defeat Karolina Pliskova and Karolina Muchova before losing to Aryna Sabalenka.

Pavlyuchenkova avenged that defeat to Sabalenka in the third round and went on to beat Victoria Azarenka in the last 16. Azarenka led the head-to-head 5-1 and won the first set 7-5, but Pavlyuchenkova – surprisingly – was the steadier and more confident player over the long haul, winning 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.

This is the seventh Grand Slam quarterfinal of 29-year-old Pavlyuchenkova’s career. She has never won one, but that experience of playing matches on the big stages could stand her in good stead against the younger Rybakina.

Pavlyuchenkova is the underdog, but I think it’s worth backing her to win by 4.5 games or more, as she has done in three of her last four matches. It is a safer bet to back the match to see 19.5 games or more.
