Eighth seed Andrey Rublev was a quarterfinalist at the French Open in 2020 and is 29-8 so far in 2021. He is being backed to get a third straight win vs Jan-Lennard Struff to start his Roland Garros 2021 campaign – but big-serving Struff can be a tough opponent.

Andrey Rublev Form
Winner of five titles in 2020, Andrey Rublev recorded a significant milestone in April when he reached his first Masters 1000 Series final on clay at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, beating Rafael Nadal to do so.
Unfortunate to have landed in the loaded top half of the French Open draw, Rublev could be on a quarterfinal collision course with Nadal once more. But first he has to get past big-serving Jan-Lennard Struff, who reached the last 16 in Paris in 2019 (beating two seeds on the way).
Rublev has failed to get past the quarterfinals of his last three tournaments with defeats to Jannik Sinner, John Isner and Lorenzo Sonego – his incredible start to 2021 which saw him win 15 of his first 16 matches has dropped off a bit and he needs to regain momentum at Roland Garros.

Jan-Lennard Struff Form
A big server from Germany, Jan-Lennard Struff hit a career-high ranking of world no. 29 last autumn when he beat David Goffin and Denis Shapovalov to reach the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Masters.
At the age of 30, he appeared to be playing some of the best tennis of his career in 2019-20.
After suffering a second-round defeat to a qualifier at last year’s French Open, however, Struff has had an average 2021 so far. He has compiled a 13-13 win-loss record, losing to an Australian wildcard in the first round of the Australian Open.
Eight of Struff’s 13 match wins so far in 2021 have come on clay, on which surface he made the final of the BMW Open in Munich, losing out to Nikoloz Basilashvili.
He pushed Rublev the distance at the Rome Masters and has beaten seeded players at the French Open before. He has lost seven of his last eight matches vs top-10 players.
Andrey Rublev and Jan-Lennard Struff meet in the French Open first round (day and time TBC).

Rublev will likely beat but Struff, but the German should be able to keep the score fairly close. He can take a set from Rublev as he has done in both their matches so far in 2021.
