Jannik Sinner vs Carlos Alcaraz Preview

This is undoubtedly the toughest matchup to call on tour right now. Both players are elite, incredibly well-matched, and more than capable of beating each other on their day.

Carlos Alcaraz holds a slight edge with a four-match winning streak in this rivalry and appears to be the more complete clay-court player, but it would be a mistake to underestimate Jannik Sinner given the red-hot form he’s in.

Personally, I wouldn’t bet against either of them. Instead, I’d look at options like total games or sets played, as it’s hard to imagine this one being anything other than a tight, hard-fought contest. Most of their meetings have been close, and it’s unlikely either man will go down without a serious fight.

Jannik Sinner Form

Jannik Sinner's perfect set record at this year's French Open came under serious pressure in the semifinals, but he rose to the occasion and kept it intact with a commanding straight-sets win over Novak Djokovic, the 24-time Grand Slam winner and three-time Roland Garros champion.

The victory improves Sinner’s record for the year to 18 wins and just one loss. That sole defeat came at the hands of his rival and upcoming final opponent, Carlos Alcaraz, in straight sets at the Rome Masters last month.

Sinner is now riding a 20-match winning streak in Grand Slam events, having claimed back-to-back titles at the 2024 US Open and 2025 Australian Open. Even more impressive, he has won his last 29 consecutive sets in majors, a run that stretches back to the fourth round in Melbourne earlier this year.

He has featured in three Grand Slam finals in his career so far and has won all of them. A win on Sunday in Paris would make him just the third player in the Open Era to win their first four major finals, joining Roger Federer (7) and Carlos Alcaraz (4).

Carlos Alcaraz Form

Carlos Alcaraz wasn't quite as clinical as Jannik Sinner in the semifinals, putting in a typically unpredictable performance. It was a match full of swings, but he showed his trademark grit when it counted most, coming from a set down to beat the in-form Lorenzo Musetti.

Given Alcaraz's all-round skillset, his comfort on clay, and the strong form he's shown during this clay swing, it always felt likely he'd secure one of the spots in Sunday’s final. He’s now won 21 of his 22 matches on clay this year, picking up major titles in Monte Carlo and Rome along the way.

Alcaraz broke through at Roland Garros last year, winning his first French Open title in 2024. It was a massive relief for him, as he had been under heavy pressure and scrutiny at this venue due to constant comparisons with compatriot and clay-court legend Rafael Nadal.

Now, he’s aiming to become just the third man this century to successfully defend the French Open crown, joining Gustavo Kuerten and Nadal in that elite club. In last year’s tournament, he edged past Jannik Sinner in a five-set semifinal, then came through another five-set battle in the final against Alexander Zverev.

Alcaraz is 4-0 in Grand Slam finals and boasts an 11-1 record in major finals and Masters-level title matches. His only loss in such high-stakes matches came against Novak Djokovic at the 2023 Cincinnati Masters, where he led by a set and a break before losing his grip.

Verdict

This is a very tough match to call. Both are top players and evenly matched. Alcaraz has the edge with recent H2H domination and clay skills, but Sinner’s form is strong. Neither is a clear favourite, so betting on sets or total games makes more sense.
