Lorenzo Musetti vs Carlos Alcaraz Preview

Carlos Alcaraz needs no introduction on clay. He’s the defending French Open champion and, without question, the best player on this surface right now. The only real question heading into this match is how quickly he’ll get the job done.

After rediscovering his dominant form in the quarterfinals, he’s expected to carry that momentum forward and close this one out in straight sets or possibly in four.

Lorenzo Musetti Form

Lorenzo Musetti came close to a disqualification during the qualifiers after accidentally kicking a ball that struck the line judge, but aside from that incident, he faced little danger in the match itself, cruising to a comfortable four-set win over Frances Tiafoe.

With this result, Musetti has continued his streak of reaching the semifinals in every tournament he has played during this clay court swing. He was the runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz at the Monte Carlo Masters and made it to the semifinals in both Madrid and Rome, where he lost to Jack Draper and Carlos Alcaraz respectively.

In each of his previous four French Open appearances, Musetti was eliminated by a top-10 player. He lost twice to Novak Djokovic, once to Stefanos Tsitsipas, and once to Carlos Alcaraz. Three of those defeats went the distance, with the only straight-set loss coming against Alcaraz.

This marks just the second Grand Slam semifinal of Musetti's career. His first came at Wimbledon last year, where he was defeated in straight sets by Djokovic.

Carlos Alcaraz Form

Carlos Alcaraz delivered his best performance of the tournament in the quarterfinals, dismantling world No. 12 Tommy Paul with a dominant 6-0, 6-1, 6-4 win. It was a much-needed statement from the Spaniard, who had dropped a set in each of his previous three matches.

Alcaraz now holds a 20-1 record on clay this year. He has captured titles at both the Monte Carlo Masters and the Rome Masters and was the runner-up in Barcelona, where he sustained an injury during his match against Holger Rune.

He is currently on a 12-match winning streak at the French Open, having claimed the 2024 title by beating Italy’s Jannik Sinner in a five-set semifinal and following it up with another five-set win over Alexander Zverev in the final.

By his high standards, Alcaraz has a fairly modest 4-2 record in Grand Slam semifinals. One of those losses came here in Paris in 2023, when the pressure seemed to get to him and he suffered from body cramps in a four-set defeat to Novak Djokovic.

Verdict

Carlos Alcaraz is the man to beat on clay and the reigning French Open champion. With momentum on his side after a ruthless quarterfinal, the only question is whether he finishes this in three sets or four.
