Iga Swiatek Form

Iga Swiatek had the toughest match of her French Open title defense against Marta Kostyuk in the fourth round.

Kostyuk played a great match and came at Swiatek with a lot of power, while Swiatek served at 56% and won less than 50% of points behind her second serve. She also struggled to find any consistency on her forehand, but still won 6-3, 6-4.

Swiatek has now won her last ten matches, her last 11 French Open matches and her last 22 sets played at the French Open.

Maria Sakkari Form

Maria Sakkari has been playing some of the best tennis of her career over the past couple of years and a first Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance is not a surprise.

Sakkari’s solitary WTA Tour title came on clay in Rabat in 2019. In 2020, she made the semifinals of St Petersburg and Ostrava and scored one of her biggest career wins over Serena Williams in Cincinnati.

A counterpunching player who makes up for her lack of height with extreme athleticism, Sakkari has worked hard to add more aggressive dimensions to her game.

A semifinalist in Abu Dhabi and Miami in 2021, she has scored wins over Coco Gauff, Garbine Muguruza, Sofia Kenin and Naomi Osaka this year. After a three-set battle with Elise Mertens in the third round, Sakkari crushed last year’s French Open finalist Kenin 6-1, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals.

Verdict

Sakkari is an extremely tough opponent who gives little away. However, Swiatek has established a record of brilliance at the French Open over the past two years and I am backing another straight-sets win for the Pole.
