Matteo Berrettini Form

Italy’s big-serving Matteo Berrettini had his breakthrough run at the US Open in 2019 when he made the semifinals, although he has yet to reach the last eight at any other major.

Berrettini suffered an unfortunate abdominal injury at the Australian Open which saw him forced to withdraw. But since returning for clay, he has been in excellent form, compiling a 10-3 win-loss record. After winning the title in Belgrade, Berrettini went on to reach the final of the Madrid Masters and has beaten Aslan Karatsev and Casper Ruud on clay in 2021.

With his big serve and big forehand, Berrettini is reliably more powerful than many other players and his slice backhand is significant in terms of allowing him to defend and disrupt the rhythm of his opponents.

Taro Daniel Form

A journeyman with an 0-5 record vs top-10 players, Taro Daniel won two hard-court Challenger titles in 2020 and has spent much of 2021 playing Challenger tournaments, making semifinals in Nur-Sultan and Oeiras (both on clay).

Daniel is 22-13 in 2021 and had his best ATP Tour result in Belgrade, where he lost in qualifying, entered the draw as a lucky loser and went on to make the semifinals, beating Joao Sousa, John Millman and Federico Delbonis before losing to Berrettini.

Daniel came through qualifying without dropping a set, but the highest-ranked player he faced was world no. 167 Paolo Lorenzi.

Berrettini has been on great form and although Daniel is an irritating opponent, who could perhaps push him to a tie-break as he did in Belgrade, the ninth seed should be expected to get a straight-sets win.
