The Serbian had a poor start on clay, knocked out in the quarter-finals in Banja Luka and Rome.
The World No.3 won in straight sets in his opening four matches at the French Open, breezing past Aleksandar Kovacevic, Marton Fucsovics, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Juan Pablo Varillas 6-3 6-2 6-2.
Djokovic overcame Karen Khachanov 4-6 7-6 6-2 6-4 in the quarter-finals before getting past World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz 6-3 5-7 6-1 6-1 in the semi-finals.
Ruud had a strong start at the French Open, beating Elias Ymer 6-4 6-3 6-2. He defeated Giulio Zeppieri 6-3 6-2 4-6 7-5 and came from behind to beat Zhizhen Zhang 4-6 6-4 6-1 6-4.
Ruud got past Nicolas Jarry 7-6 7-5 7-5 and defeated Holger Rune 6-1 6-2 3-6 6-3 in the quarter-finals. He was far too good for Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals, winning 6-3 6-4 6-0.
In 2023, Ruud is 22-11 including winning the title in his only final appearance in Estoril.
The Norwegian competed on five more tournaments on clay, his best result coming at the Rome Masters where he lost to Holger Rune in the semi-finals.
