Sofia Kenin Form

Her tenacity and resilience were the talk of the French Open last year as she battled her way to the final before losing to Iga Swiatek. Sofia Kenin proved with that run that she was no one-Slam wonder, but the 2020 Australian Open champion has struggled in 2021.

Kenin’s Australian Open title defense was ended in the second round by Kaia Kanepi and she has lost more matches than she has won in 2021. She has lost her last four matches and has not defeated a player ranked in the top 100 since January.

Kenin recently announced that she will no longer be coached by her father, which is a clear sign that she is struggling to find her way. Her counter-punching game is effective on clay but she is vulnerable to more powerful and aggressive players like Ostapenko.

Jelena Ostapenko Form

A very solid run in Rome has bolstered Jelena Ostapenko’s confidence heading into the French Open. She defeated Johanna Konta, Ajla Tomljanovic and Angelique Kerber to reach the quarterfinals where she narrowly fell short to Karolina Pliskova.

Ostapenko has a 13-9 record in 2021 which includes three victories over players ranked in the top 20. She also knocked out second seed Pliskova from the French Open last year, her best result in Paris since winning the title in 2017.

A Wimbledon semifinalist in 2018, Ostapenko struggles badly with consistency and her serve is extremely attackable – she is prone to double faults, as well as to wild unforced errors off the ground. But she is devastatingly powerful and can blast other players off the court.

Verdict

Ostapenko is favoured to pull off the win over the struggling Kenin. Kenin has a history of playing lengthy matches so the match should go past 22.5 games.
