Hobart International History

The Hobart International began in 1994 as part of the Australian Open Series in the run-up to the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament of the year. It was previously classed as an Tier IV event before becoming an International tournament on the WTA Tour.

The tournament has been sponsored by Moorilla Wines, ANZ and Schweppes and has always been played at the Hobart International Tennis Centre in Hobart, Australia.

The Hobart International was played on Rebound Ace and continued with the Rebound Ace surfance after the Australian Open changed to Plexicushion in 2008. Under pressure from Tennis Australia who required all Australian Open Series tournaments to change their court surfaces to Plexicushion, the Domain Tennis Centre resurfaced to Plexicushion in time for the 2009 Hobart International.

Prior to the 2010 Hobart International Final, Tennis Australia announced that the future of the Hobart International was secured until 2013.
