Indian Wells Masters History
The Indian Wells Masters originated in 1974 with Australian John Newcombe taking the first title against American Arthur Ashe. Since 1974 the tournament has gone by numerous names including The American Airlines Tennis Games (1974-1978), The Congoleum Classic (1979-1980, 1982-1984), The Pilot Pen Classic (1985-1987), The Newsweek Champions Cup (1988-1999), The Tennis Masters series Indian Wellis (2000-2001) and The Pacific Life Open (2002-2008). Since 2009 it has gone by the name of the Indian Wells Masters.
From 1974 to 1976 the tournament was a non tour event before being upgraded to a secondary tournament on the Grand Prix Tennis Tour from 1977 to 1986. In 1987 it was further upgraded to the Grand Prix Super Series, a series of nine tournaments just below the four Grand Slams.
The Indian Wells Masters is now part of the ATP World Tour 1000 events, still just below the four majors. It is one of few tournaments where the main draw extends beyond eight days.
The Indian Wells Masters is played on outdoor hard courts and is one of the best attended tournaments outside of the Grand Slams. The main singles draw consists of 96 players of which 32 are seeded, the seeded players get a bye into the second round of the Indian Wells Masters.
