The suspension of Jannik Sinner gave Alexander Zverev a real shot at the world #1 ranking, a goal he'd been chasing for a while. But, unfortunately, he messed it up big time and now looks totally short of confidence and momentum.

His decision to make a rare trip to South America to compete on the clay courts didn't pan out well. He had early exits in both Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro, which really sucked the early-season momentum he had built.

The transition from clay back to hard courts has also been tough for him. He suffered another early exit in Acapulco last week, where the title was looking like a real possibility. But he couldn't get past Learner Tien in the second round.

Now, Zverev heads to Indian Wells short on form but with big expectations on his shoulders as the top seed. This is the first time in his career he’s holding down the top seed at a Masters event.

The German has a strong record at the Masters level, consistently progressing deep and picking up titles in these tournaments since the early days of his career. He even won the most recent Masters tournament in Paris last November.

However, he hasn’t been able to show his Masters pedigree at Indian Wells yet. In his previous nine attempts at this event, his best result was reaching the quarterfinals twice, in 2021 and 2024.

Tallon Griekspoor Form

Tallon Griekspoor just can’t seem to avoid matchups with top players at the moment. He faced top-20 players 20 times in 2024 (3-17), and this is already his sixth such match of the 2025 season.

Since he can’t dodge them, the only real solution for the Dutchman was to start beating them, and he started doing just that in Dubai last week. He took down Ugo Humbert and Daniil Medvedev in back-to-back matches to reach the quarterfinals.

It looks like he’s ready to continue this redemption run and score another top-20 win when he faces Alexander Zverev. But it won’t be easy, as he holds a poor 1-10 career record against top-20 players in Masters events.

Two of those ten top-20 defeats came in this very tournament at Indian Wells, against Carlos Alcaraz in the third round in 2023 and against Alexander Zverev in the third round last year.
