Donna Vekic had played in Indian Wells nine times in the past but had never been beyond its second-round hurdle. That is, fortunately for her, not the case anymore.

Backed by a first-round bye, she has defeated Elina Avanesyan and Emma Navarro in straight sets, with the win over the latter becoming her first top-10 win on hard courts in over a year.

She needs a strong two weeks in Indian Wells to compensate for her slow start to the season, which included four opening-round losses from Adelaide to Merida.

Vekic has certainly lost a great deal of her momentum compared to last year when she became the semifinalist at Wimbledon and the silver medalist at the Paris Olympics.

Madison Keys Form

Madison Keys has stretched her winning streak to an epic 14 matches but did hear some alarm bells while facing Elise Mertens in the third round.

She wasted four match points that would have given her a simple straight-set win over Mertens, and instead needed nearly three hours to win, 6-2, 6-7, 6-4.

There is no greater cause for concern, however, as she is strongly favored to reach her fourth quarterfinal of the season from four tournaments.

Keys has become an entirely different player since changing her racket brand in the offseason, winning 16 of 17 matches since and becoming a first-time Grand Slam champion in Melbourne at the age of 29.

She hasn't met Vekic since losing their last encounter in Toronto way back in 2019 (3-6, 7-6, 7-6), but it is expected Keys will simply roll into the quarterfinal of Indian Wells.

Her round-of-16 record here stands at 1-1, with that loss coming to Caroline Wozniacki in 2017.
