Pegula has proven she has not lost her Midas touch on North American hard courts after winning her first seven US matches of the season. Although she hasn't been as successful in Indian Wells as Elina Svitolina, the American is expected to pip the Ukrainian.

Elina Svitolina would not be thrilled to be meeting Pegula for the second time in two months after losing to the American in Doha in straight sets.

However, Svitolina should be somewhat comforted after having already defeated two Americans this fortnight, Ashlyn Krueger in three sets and Danielle Collins in straights.

In general, she is not playing poor tennis by any stretch of the imagination and in fact has been to two Grand Slam quarterfinals over the last year.

Two months ago, Svitolina defeated world No. 4 Jasmine Paolini at the Australian Open in three sets for her first top-10 win on hard courts in nearly four years.

She has the experience of having played the fourth-round match in Indian Wells four times (1-3), going as far as the semifinal in 2019, but Pegula is likely to be a too tough of an opponent.

While she continues to play good tennis in all environments, the American has been particularly strong on North American hard courts and remains so.

She reached the finals of Toronto (won the title), Cincinnati, and the US Open in the months of August and September last year, and won a WTA 250 title in Austin a few days ago.

Currently aged 31, Pegula has usually been considered a late bloomer in Indian Wells. This is only her third instance of going past the second round of the tournament, after 2021 (QF) and 2023 (4R).

She might have something special in store this fortnight, given her seven-match winning streak on US courts, which includes straight-set wins over Magda Linette and Wang Xinyu.

Pegula has been to 41 quarterfinals on tour since the start of 2020, while Elina Svitolina has only managed five in the same period.
