Elise Mertens has been attempting to rejuvenate her career after a couple of good WTA 250 results in the season: runner-up in Hobart and champion in Singapore.

She will be eager to get her hands on any results after failing to reach a quarterfinal in any tournament from Stuttgart to Osaka last year, and momentarily dropping outside the top 30.

Although she did well to defeat Kimberly Birrell in close straight sets in the opening round, Mertens is highly unlikely to get far in Indian Wells and match last year's result.

Mertens has lost her last nine matches against top-10 players, including to Jessica Pegula in Melbourne and Paula Badosa in Dubai this season.

Madison Keys possibly had some concerns of rustiness when she arrived in Indian Wells after a break of six weeks, but she coolly defeated Anastasia Potapova at the loss of only three games.

Keys is now expected to go deep in Indian Wells, even if she has a history of sparsely playing well at this tournament.

Since her tournament debut in 2011, she has been to the fourth round on a couple of occasions, in 2017 and in 2022, settling with a quarterfinal finish in the latter edition.

Currently, she has become a completely different player since changing her racket brand in the offseason and has since won 15 of 16 matches, including finally becoming a Grand Slam champion in Melbourne.
