Jack Draper vs Taylor Fritz Preview

Taylor Fritz has been uncharacteristically shaky and inconsistent this year, so based on their recent form, Jack Draper is absolutely the deserved favourite.

However, Fritz’s experience in big matches and on big stages, combined with the advantage of playing at home in a tournament where he’s had past success, suggests he’ll step up and put in a stronger performance. Expect Fritz to challenge Draper hard, potentially winning a set and pushing him to the limit.

Jack Draper’s past appearances at the Sunshine Double have mostly ended in retirement or him running out of steam after physically gruelling battles.

With that in mind, it’s crucial for him to avoid long, energy-sapping matches to keep his chances high. So far, he’s done a solid job of that.

He bageled the in-form, high-flying Joao Fonseca in a 6-4, 6-0 rout in the opening round, then backed it up a couple of days later with a straight-sets win over the tricky Jenson Brooksby in the third round.

Draper is now just one win away from securing his best-ever result at Indian Wells. He reached the round of 16 on debut last year but couldn’t finish his match against Carlos Alcaraz, who went on to win the title.

Since then, he’s made the round of 16 at Masters events twice, beating Felix Auger-Aliassime in Cincinnati 2024 but falling to Alex de Minaur in Paris 2024.

On the other hand, Taylor Fritz has been underperforming all year, and his form at Indian Wells hasn’t looked much better.

He was far from convincing against underdogs Matteo Gigante and Alejandro Tabilo, but neither of them was able to capitalise and punish him for it.

What’s concerning is that Fritz’s level hasn’t picked up despite spending a few weeks at home. He’s traditionally been strong on home soil, with a stack of wins in the US playing a big role in his rise to the top level.

His best Masters results have also come on home turf, most notably here at Indian Wells, where he won the biggest title of his career in 2022 and has made the quarterfinals or better in three of the last four editions.
