The concerns surrounding Gaël Monfils' current fitness do seem encouraging for Jan-Lennard Struff's prospects. However, even factoring in those concerns, Monfils' superb form this year and his dominant head-to-head record make him the favorite to win here.

Jan-Lennard Struff's career has completely lost direction and gone off track ever since he suffered an injury setback at the Paris Olympics in July 2024.

Since then, he has won only six matches out of 18, suffering 12 defeats, and continues to drop in the rankings, now on the verge of falling out of the top 50.

On the positive side, his recent performances have been more competitive, giving him hope that he can exit this current slump soon.

He reached the quarterfinals in Marseille last month and had close matches with Tallon Griekspoor in Doha and Daniil Medvedev in Dubai.

Struff made his Masters main draw debut at Indian Wells in 2015 and has since made eight appearances at the tournament, with his best result being a Round of 16 run in 2019.

Gaël Monfils started the season by making history, becoming the oldest ATP title winner in the Open Era with his victory in Auckland.

The veteran Frenchman carried that form into the Australian Open, building on his strong start to the year by reaching the Round of 16 after upsetting Taylor Fritz.

Unfortunately, the 38-year-old faced physical issues once again, forcing him to retire in the Round of 16 at the Australian Open, which put a halt to his impressive momentum.

Since then, Monfils has played just one match, losing in straight sets to Matteo Berrettini in Dubai last week.

None of the players competing at Indian Wells this week, not even Novak Djokovic, have as much experience at this tournament as Monfils. He made his debut here back in 2006 and has appeared in 15 editions of the event.

He has also performed reasonably well at Indian Wells compared to other high-profile events. Monfils is a two-time former quarterfinalist here and reached the Round of 16 in 2024.
