The 25-year-old failed to get past the second round in Mexico and Indian Wells Challenger. Hibino returned after lockdown in poor form.

Elena Rybakina began 2020 by reaching the Shenzhen Open Final where she was defeated by Ekaterina Alexandrova. The 21-year-old then won the Hobart International, beating Shuai Zhang 7-6 6-3 in the final.

Rybakina lost to World No.1 Ashleigh Barty in the Australian Open third round. She then reached the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy final, going down 6-1 6-3 to 2nd seed Kiki Bertens.

Elena Rybakina reached her fourth final in 2020 at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. She lost 3-6 6-3 7-6 to top seed Simona Halep but achieved a career high ranking of World No.17 after the tournament.

The Kazakhstan player returned to action by getting knocked out early at the Western & Southern Open and US Open. Rybakina started the clay court season at the Italian Open.

She beat Ekaterina Alexandrova and Marie Bouzkovain straight sets before a third round exit against Yulia Putintseva. Rybakina was leading 6-4, 5-2 and was two points from victory on three occasions.
