Novak Djokovic made a winning return to action following his recent US Open disqualification, recording a comfortable win over Salvatore Caruso at the Italian Open on Wednesday.

Djokovic, the world number one, beat wildcard Caruso 6-3 6-2 in the second round in Rome.

The 33-year-old had been disqualified at the US Open after accidentally hitting a line judge with a ball during a match against Pablo Carreno Busta.

Rafael Nadal also made a winning start to the week, beating Carreno Busta – who reached the semi-finals in New York - 6-1 6-1.

It was Nadal’s first competitive match for over six months after he opted to miss the US Open over safety concerns.

"It's good to be back on the tour but obviously the feeling is not the best playing without crowds," the 34-year-old said on Wednesday night.

Nadal added: "I played a good match. Maybe he was a little bit tired from New York [where] he played an amazing tournament."
