Novak Djokovic and defending champion Rafael Nadal both advanced to the quarter-finals of the Italian Open on Friday.

Djokovic saved five break points to record a 7-6 6-3 win over Filip Krajinovic to reach the quarter-finals in Rome for the 14th year in a row.

The 33-year-old, who is playing in his first tournament since being disqualified at the US Open for accidentally hitting a line judge with a ball at the US Open, will next face Dominik Koepfer of Germany for a place in the final four.

Nadal comfortably beat Dusan Lajovic 6-1 6-3 to secure his quarter-final place and remains on course for a 10th Italian Open title.

"I played at I think a very positive level of tennis,” the Spaniard said on Friday night.

“Of course it needs to keep improving. I need to keep working on a couple of things that are not coming automatically, but I can't ask for more.

"I can't complain at all. Much better than what I expected."

Next up for Nadal is Diego Schwartzman of Argentina.
