Cameron Norrie got a second bite at the cherry this week after falling short to Dusan Lajovic in the final round of qualifying. To his credit, he made the most of it, cruising past Christopher O'Connell in the first round with a straight-set win, 6-3, 6-2.

Norrie will be hoping for more days like this, smooth and without any drama, because lately, most of his matches have turned into real tussles. He's been battling, especially with his serve, and more often than not, he's come off second best.

This run of poor results has already taken a toll. The former world number eight is on the verge of dropping out of the top 100, currently sitting at number 91 in the ATP rankings.

He badly needs a big result to lift his confidence and get some positive momentum going, but right now, that breakthrough seems quite far off.

So far this year, Norrie has only managed 13 wins from 26 matches, and he hasn't gone past the quarterfinals even once in the last five months.

On top of that, he's on an eight-match losing streak against top-20 opponents, and hasn't beaten one of them since the Australian Open back in January 2024.

Daniil Medvedev usually doesn’t get too excited about playing on clay, but the Rome Masters has started to grow on him. After all, it was here in 2023 that he picked up his most recent title, and that brings some good memories and positive vibes heading into this year’s edition.

Since that win, though, it’s been a tough ride. A two-year title drought, along with some crushing losses to lower-ranked players, has seriously knocked his confidence.

That dip in belief has affected both his performances and results, and it’s seen him fall out of the top 10 in the ATP rankings.

This season, things haven’t gone to plan. Medvedev has struggled to hit the level most expect from him, and it's been well below his usual standards.

That said, it hasn’t been a complete disaster either. He’s been working hard to get back on track and has had a few solid results along the way.

He’s made at least the quarterfinals in two of the four Masters events this year, including Madrid just last week, where he was stopped by the eventual champion Casper Ruud in the quarters.

While Cameron Norrie is desperate for a decent run to avoid slipping out of the top 100, Medvedev is chasing a strong performance in Rome to climb back into the top 10, a result that’s well within reach if he can string together a few quality matches.
