Coco Gauff won her opening nine matches this year, helping USA claim the United Cup and reaching the Australian Open quarter-finals.

The 21-year-old went out early in Qatar, Doha, Indian Wells and Miami. She started the clay court swing in Stuttgart, beaten 6-4 6-3 by Jasmine Paolini in the quarters.

The American got back to her best in Madrid, beating Mirra Andreeva and Iga Swiatek in straight sets on her way to the final where she suffered a 6-3 7-6 defeat to Aryna Sabalenka.

Gauff got past Victoria Mboko 3-6 6-2 6-1 in Rome before beating Magda Linette 7-5 6-3, Emma Raducanu 6-1 6-2 and Mirra Andreeva 6-4 7-6. She was in trouble against Qinwen Zheng in the semi-finals, coming back in the third set to secure a 7-6 4-6 7-6 victory.

The 29-year-old repeated the feat in Stuttgart, beating Coco Gauff 6-4 6-3 on her way to another semi-final where she met Sabalenka once again, losing 7-5 6-4 after saving 2/8 break points.

Paolini lost against Maria Sakkari in the Madrid Open third round but has bounced back strong in her home event.
