Dusan Lajovic Form

Dusan Lajovic defeated Yoshihito Nishioka in straight sets in the first round at the Rome Masters, marking his third win of the season after successful runs in the qualifying stages.

This victory also marked his first main draw win in a tour-level event since the Indian Wells Masters two months ago, where he beat Li Tu in the first round but lost to Alejandro Tabilo in the second.

Lajovic’s next challenge is to win back-to-back matches in the main draw of tour-level events, something he hasn’t achieved since the ATP event in Umag last July and hasn’t done at the Rome Masters since 2020.

To end this streak, he must first overcome his struggles against top-5 players, as he faces world No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz in the second round.

Lajovic has won only three of his 19 matches against top-5 players, with his most recent win coming against Novak Djokovic in Banja Luka in 2023.

  • Form against non-top-100 players: 16-0 in the last 16 completed matches

Carlos Alcaraz Form

Carlos Alcaraz started the year with a disappointing and frustrating beginning but kicked off the clay swing perfectly by winning the title at the Monte Carlo Masters.

It was a particularly special result, considering he hadn't played much tennis at Monte Carlo and it was one of the two Masters events where he had yet to reach a quarterfinal appearance.

The other Masters event where he has yet to make a significant impact is Rome. He made just one appearance there, in 2023, and his campaign ended in the third round against Fabian Marozsan.

Alcaraz built on his Monte Carlo success and seemed on track to win the title in Barcelona, giving him a chance to sweep all the major titles during this clay swing, an achievement only accomplished once before in tennis history by the king of clay, Rafael Nadal.

Unfortunately, things took a downturn when he picked up an injury in the final at ATP Barcelona, which not only cost him the title but also forced him to miss his home Masters event in Madrid.

As a result, he now enters the Rome Masters with an injury concern and will need to overcome any doubts, hitting the ground running as soon as possible, especially considering his main rival, Jannik Sinner, is returning from suspension this week. It's shaping up to be a battle for bragging rights between the two.

Verdict

Carlos Alcaraz heads into his second-round match in Rome with a flawless record against Dusan Lajovic, having not dropped a single set in their four previous meetings. While questions remain about his fitness, the young Spaniard is still widely favoured to extend his dominance and secure a routine victory.
