Elena Rybakina vs Eva Lys Preview

Elena Rybakina returns to Rome after missing her title defense in 2024 due to illness. The former world No. 3 won this tournament in 2023 and now looks to regain her footing following a third-round exit in Madrid.

Eva Lys, making her Italian Open debut, delivered a dominant first-round win over Moyuka Uchijima, dropping just one game in a straight-sets rout. She seeks to build on that result after struggling to make deep runs this season.

Head-to-Head

This will be the pair's first meeting.

Elena Rybakina Overview

  • Current rank: 12
  • Career high rank: 3
  • ELO rank: 8
  • Season record: 18-8
  • Rome career record: 10-2

Elena Rybakina Form

Rybakina was forced to withdraw from Rome last season. She had won the title in 2023 on her third appearance, benefiting from three retirements along the way.

Although she skipped the Italian Open, Rybakina had a productive clay swing in 2024, leading to a title in Stuttgart, a semifinal in Madrid, and a quarterfinal at Roland-Garros.

There have been eight quarterfinal or better results in her clay career, two at Roland-Garros.

She has maintained steady results in 2025, reaching the quarterfinal or semifinal in all three Middle East tournaments and the fourth rounds of the Australian Open and Indian Wells.

Her clay swing started with a promising win over Bianca Andreescu in Madrid but ended in a disappointing third-round loss to Elina Svitolina.

Eva Lys Overview

  • Current rank: 63
  • Career high rank: 63
  • ELO rank: 75
  • Season record: 14-11 at all levels
  • WTA Clay-court record: 9-9 before this week
  • Career top-20 record: 0-6

Eva Lys Form

Lys breezed through her first-round match in Rome, dismantling Moyuka Uchijima 6-1, 6-0 in less than an hour, facing just a single breakpoint.

She has not advanced past the second round of any tour-level event since the Australian Open, where she reached the fourth round as a lucky loser.

Her form has dipped since Melbourne, but she did deliver a 125K quarterfinal finish in La Bisbal, Spain, for what it is worth.

Over the last year, the German has broken into the top 100 and risen into the 60s in the rankings.

She has been the semifinalist in Budapest (on clay) and Monastir and the quarterfinalist in Osaka.

However, taking on Rybakina is a challenge of an entirely different level, something for which she is ill-prepared. Lys has managed to win just one set in her previous six top-20 clashes.

Verdict

Rybakina holds a significant advantage given her experience in general and past success in Rome in particular. Lys needs nothing short of a miracle to avoid a likely defeat.
