Fabian Marozsan’s strong track record at the Masters level, along with his considerable experience on European clay, means he can’t be taken lightly. He is expected to put up a solid fight, win plenty of games, and possibly push the match into tiebreaks or even a deciding set.

However, the result will largely depend on the level Joao Fonseca brings to the court. He has been playing tennis of top-20 calibre at times this year, and if he maintains that standard, he stands a good chance of coming out on top in this encounter.

Rome is a special place for Fabian Marozsan, as it was here where he made his big breakthrough on the main tour. And it wasn’t just any breakthrough – it was a jaw-dropping run that turned plenty of heads.

He made his debut at the Rome Masters in 2023, which was also his first-ever appearance in the main draw of a tour-level event. He stunned the field by reaching the round of 16, pulling off a major upset against tournament favourite Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets.

That result not only helped him settle into life on the main tour, but it also gave him the belief to perform well at the Masters level.

He went on to reach the quarterfinals in both Shanghai and Miami, and made it to the round of 16 in Indian Wells, results that eventually pushed him into the top 40.

However, that impressive run at the Masters events has not continued this year. He will be hoping that a return to Rome can help get him back on track.

So far in 2025, he has played in all four of the season’s Masters events but has managed just one main draw win, which came against Pedro Martinez in Indian Wells. His form overall has been below par, and he currently holds a 13-11 win-loss record for the year.

Joao Fonseca is still relatively new to European clay, but his experience on the surface this year has been fairly encouraging.

He recently pushed Tommy Paul in a tight match in Madrid and, although he suffered a surprising first-round loss to Jesper De Jong at the Estoril Challenger last week, he has shown promise.

The young Brazilian only made his debut on European clay in 2024. He got off to a solid start with wins in Bucharest and at the Madrid Masters, but his clay campaign didn’t last long and he skipped the Rome Masters altogether. That means this will be his first appearance in Rome.

Fonseca is also new to the Masters 1000 level, having played just four main-draw matches in these events so far.

Impressively, he has made it past the opening round in all four, including three times this year in Indian Wells (R2), Miami (R3), and Madrid (R2).

South Americans generally perform well on clay, and Fonseca has already shown his strength on the surface by winning the title in Buenos Aires earlier this year. With that in mind, adapting to European clay and making his mark feels like just a matter of time.
