Paula Badosa returns to competition after withdrawing from the fourth round of the Miami Open. The Spaniard had been in strong form before the setback, climbing from No. 140 to the top 10 within a year.

Naomi Osaka continues her resurgence, defeating former finalist Sara Errani in Rome to extend her clay-court winning streak to six matches. She recently claimed her first professional title on clay at 125K Saint-Malo.

Osaka has the form advantage heading into this contest and has just as good a track record in Rome as Badosa.

Osaka continues her momentum on clay, dismissing Sara Errani in straight sets to kick off her sixth Italian Open campaign.

She recently won her first professional clay-court title at 125K Saint-Malo, overcoming multiple three-set matches along the way. It was also her first trophy since becoming a parent.

Osaka had also reached the final in Auckland and the fourth round in Miami earlier in the season, helping ensure a return to the top-50 rankings.

She has gone past the second round of the Italian Open twice in her career, leading to a quarterfinal in 2019 and a fourth-round finish in 2024.

While she has never been a clay-court expert, Osaka must be feeling quite good about her chances on Roman clay.

Her withdrawal due to a chronic back injury in Miami was an unfortunate and potentially serious setback, as she now returns to play in Rome.

She has never lost an opening-round match at the Italian Open and became its quarterfinalist in 2023, her 12th and latest instance of a last-eight appearance on clay.
