The Spaniard lost 6-4 6-4 to Alexander Zverev at the Madrid Masters quarter-finals.

The 34-year-old started with a tough test in Rome, getting past Jannik Sinner 7-5 6-4 in the second round. He beat Denis Shapovalov 3-6 6-4 7-6 in the third round, trailing 0-3 in the second set and saving two match points in the third set.
