Arthur Fils had a solid start to the year and competed in nine events on clay, reaching quarter-finals in Santiago and Barcelona alongside a title win at the Bordeaux Challenger.

The 20-year-old won the title in Hamburg before a first round exit at the Olympics. He went 3-5 on his return to hard courts, early exits in Montreal, Cincinnati and the US Open followed by losing two of three matches at the Davis Cup.

The Frenchman upset top seed Taylor Fritz 6-4 3-6 6-3 in the first round in Tokyo. He was down 6-7 when Matteo Berrettini retired before a tough 7-5 6-7 7-6 victory over Ben Shelton.

Fils overcame Holger Rune 7-6 7-6 in the semi-finals, saving 3/4 break points in a match that went over two hours.
