The 30-year-old failed to fire on clay and his best performance on grass came in a semi-final appearance at Queen’s Club.

The Australian returned to hard courts in Atlanta where he lost to Yoshihito Nishioka in the final. He went out in the quarter-finals in Washington, second round in Montreal and withdrew in the Cincinnati Masters third round.

Thompson took out 7th seed Hubert Hurkacz at the US Open before a fourth round defeat to Alex de Minaur. He played one match since, a 3 sets loss against Pablo Carreno Busta at the Davis Cup.
