2019 WTA Japan Women’s Open Top Contenders

Su-Wei Hsieh (5.00)

By far the stand-out player at the 2019 WTA Japan Women’s Open, Su-Wei Hsieh is the highest-ranked player by 23 places, is the top seed and defending champion. The Chinese Taipei player has had some good results this season, including a semi-final in Dubai and a quarter-final at Indian Wells. Hsieh is the best player at the tournament, and I am backing her to successfully defend her title.

Anastasia Potapova (9.00)

Anastasia Potapova, seeded fourth this week, is one of the up-and-coming players on the WTA Tour and the 18-year-old enters the Japan Women’s Open in encouraging form. Potapova is still a raw talent but she has the game to go far this week.

Zarina Diyas (9.00)

Zarina Diyas arrives at the 2019 WTA Japan Women’s Open as the sixth seed and joint-second favourite to win the title. The Kazakhstani player is in good form, having caused Ashleigh Barty real problems at the US Open and reaching the Washington Open quarter-finals. Diyas can follow up her 2017 Tokyo triumph this week.

Alison Van Uytvanck (11.00)

Priced as the fourth favourite at the 2019 WTA Japan Women’s Open, there isn’t much about Alison Van Uytvanck’s form that suggests she could win the title this week having lost three of her past four matches.

Veronika Kudermetova (13.00)

Veronika Kudermetova, seeded second at the 2019 WTA Japan Women’s Open, is not in good form having lost her past three matches, all to players ranked outside the top-60. Even with a depleted field this week, I don’t see the Russian making an impression.

2019 WTA Japan Women’s Open Outsiders

Laura Siegemund (17.00)

Laura Siegemund, seeded eighth this week, has had some decent results in 2019 and the German can carry that over to Hiroshima for a strong tournament.

Sara Sorribes Tormo (21.00)

Sara Sorribes Tormo put together a good run to reach the Vancouver Open final before the US Open, so the Spaniard has the confidence for a good run at the Japan Women’s Open.

Tatjana Maria (21.00)

Tatjana Maria is seeded fifth this week and reached the second round of the Canadian Open prior to the US Open before losing to Naomi Osaka. If the German can find her best form, she has the ability to win the tournament.
