The Kremlin Cup began in 1990 and was the first international professional tennis tournament to be held in Russia. The Kremlin Cup was originally a men's only event and became a joint men's and women's event in 1996.

The Kremlin Cup is currently part of the ATP World Tour 250 series on the ATP Tour and a Premier Tournament on the WTA Tour. 

The Kremlin Cup was held at the Olympic Stadium in Moscow, Russia until 2018. The 2019 and 2020 Kremlin Cups were held at the Ice Palace Krylatskoye in Moscow while the Olympic Stadium underwent reconstruction.

The Kremlin Cup was played on a carpet surface until 2007 when it switched to the indoor hard court surface known as a RuKortHard surface.
