Luxembourg Open Tennis History
The Luxembourg Open was first held in 1991 as an exhibition event that featured winners including Jana Novotná, Martina Navratilova and Sabine Appelmans. In 1996 the Luxembourg Open became a WTA Tier III tournament with winners including Amanda Coetzer, Mary Pierce, Kim Clijsters and Jennifer Capriati.
The Luxembourg Open was promoted to a Tier II event in 2005 with Kim Clijsters, Alona Bondarenko and Ana Ivanovic lifting the trophy. In 2008 the Luxembourg was downgraded to a WTA Tier III tournament with Russia's Elena Dementieva defeating Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki in the final.
In 2009 the Luxembourg Open became an International Series tournament with winners including Venus Williams, Caroline Wozniacki, Julia Görges and Jeļena Ostapenko.
