Coco Gauff had returned to the champion's table last year with titles in Beijing and WTA Finals, and started the 2025 season with a nine-match winning streak.

She greatly helped Team USA in winning the United Cup and led all the way to the quarterfinal at the Australian Open.

However, Gauff seems to have lost her way since, losing the opening-round matches in Doha and Dubai, and needing unusually extra effort to defeat Moyuka Uchijima and Maria Sakkari in Indian Wells.

She is likely to be a bit tense while facing a fellow hard-court Grand Slam champion, but is still expected to get away with possibly a three-set affair.

Sofia Kenin is clawing her way back to form after plummeting outside the top 150 in late 2024.

She started her resurgence with a final in Tokyo and has since reached quarterfinals in Hobart and Dubai, as well as the third round in Doha.

Her straight-set win over Petra Kvitova in the first round is a significant boost, bringing her closer to matching her best Miami Open performance: third-round showings on three occasions.

She has always gone toe-to-toe against Gauff, winning two of four career clashes, although lost their latest encounter at the Australian Open this January.

Kenin stands 5-11 against top-10 players since the start of 2022, which makes her the clear underdog in this encounter despite her status as a former Australian Open champion.
