Jakub Mensik defeated a fatigued and not fully fit Arthur Fils in straight sets to book his spot in the semifinals of the Miami Masters, an impressive feat on his main-draw debut.

In doing so, the highly talented Czech became the fifth-youngest player to reach the semifinals at a Masters 1000 event, following in the footsteps of Felix Auger-Aliassime, Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz and Lleyton Hewitt.

Considering he was bageled by an out-of-form Karen Khachanov early at Indian Wells and outlasted by Damir Dzumhur in the Cap Cana Challenger semifinals, Mensik’s prospects in Miami did not seem too promising.

However, a fortunate run of events and favorable matchups allowed him to survive and progress this far. He faced a tired Jack Draper in the second round and later benefitted from a walkover against Gijs Brouwer in the round of 16.

With his top-40 debut now secured, Mensik is eyeing the biggest final of his career and his second at tour level.

Before this week, he had reached two ATP semifinals, winning one against Gaël Monfils in Doha last year and losing the other to Lorenzo Musetti in Umag a few months later.

Meanwhile, Taylor Fritz arrived at this tournament looking to turn his season around after a string of disappointments earlier in the year.

He stepped up when it mattered, taking advantage of a favorable draw before edging the in-form Matteo Berrettini in a tight three-setter in the quarterfinals.

Now, in his tenth attempt, Fritz has finally reached the Miami Masters semifinals. Despite his recent struggles with form and confidence, one major advantage he holds in this matchup is his wealth of experience on the big stage.

The American has already played five Masters 1000 semifinals with one win and four losses and won the biggest title of his career on home soil in Indian Wells back in 2022.

More recently, he has competed in three high-profile semifinals, winning two by beating Frances Tiafoe at the 2024 US Open and Alexander Zverev at the 2024 ATP Finals.

Ranked world number four and the current American number one, Fritz is now just one win away from becoming the first American finalist at the Miami Masters since John Isner in 2019.

Coincidentally, Isner also faced a teenage opponent ranked outside the top 50 in the semifinals, Felix Auger-Aliassime.
