If players like Reilly Opelka, Matteo Berrettini, and Botic van de Zandschulp can beat Novak Djokovic in 2025, there is no reason why a more skilled and well-rounded player like Grigor Dimitrov cannot.

However, it is still difficult to trust him, given how he has consistently faltered against elite players on the big stage for years.

There is certainly some value in backing him, but to play it safe, opting for a games handicap is the better approach.

It was a classic Novak Djokovic performance in the quarterfinals of the Miami Masters, where he showed his trademark resilience to claw back from a big deficit and mentally wear down his opponent, Sebastian Korda, for a 6-3, 7-6 win.

This is when Djokovic becomes exponentially more dangerous, when he refuses to go down and mounts comebacks from losing positions. In that sense, both the performance and Korda’s effort were big positives.

With his vast experience and immense success in the business end of tournaments, Djokovic is always a tough opponent to handle, especially for players who aren’t part of the elite tier.

While the other semifinalists have fewer than 20 Masters-level semifinal appearances combined, Djokovic will be playing his 79th at this level on Friday.

A record 40-time Masters champion, Djokovic has made the final in Miami every time he has reached the quarterfinals. Impressively, he has converted seven of those finals into six titles, making him the joint-most successful player in the tournament’s history.

Given his track record and the calibre of players left in the draw, this is Djokovic’s best chance to finally break his title drought on the main tour.

Although he completed the last missing piece of his career puzzle by winning Olympic gold last year, he has not won a regular tour-level title since 2023, which is the longest drought of his career.

Grigor Dimitrov Form

Grigor Dimitrov’s fitness struggles led to poor form and results early in 2025, causing him to lose his hard-earned top-10 status. With no other option, he had to deliver in Miami to protect his place in the top 20.

Fortunately for Dimitrov, he rose to the occasion and found his form just in time, reaching the semifinals at the Miami Masters. This result has secured his place inside the top-20 group for now.

The way he has fought through grueling battles, pushing his endurance to the limit and still emerging victorious against players like Karen Khachanov and Francisco Cerúndolo, is impressive, especially considering his fitness struggles in 2025.

He competed in four tournaments in the first two months of the season but was unable to complete three of them, retiring mid-match on three occasions. This raised major concerns about whether his body could handle the demands of such a big season.

Dimitrov is highly experienced at this stage of Masters events, but it took him quite some time to consistently succeed in the latter rounds.

He once held a terrible 1-8 record in Masters semifinals, though that record has improved recently, with back-to-back semifinal appearances in Paris 2023 and Miami 2024.

This has already been a satisfying campaign for Dimitrov, and he can leave happy. One more win would allow him to recover all the points he earned last year when he finished as runner-up to Jannik Sinner.
