However, Boulter has an even chance at turning the table and narrowing the deficit, notwithstanding her own injury issues in the season.

Katie Boulter was able to prove that she is still in touch with her competitive form when she played in Indian Wells after an injury break of nearly two months.

She defeated Irina-Camelia Begu from a set down, and later went down fighting to Elena Rybakina in close straight sets.

Boulter is not a player to be underestimated, particularly after reaching three WTA finals in 2024. She converted the finals in San Diego and Nottingham into titles and settled as runner-up in Hong Kong.

A year ago, she had benefitted from a bye and a retirement, and later defeated world No. 13 Beatriz Haddad Maia in three sets at the Miami Open. It helped her register a new best result at the tournament (fourth round).

She is expected to have even chances at clearing the opening hurdle in Miami for the third time in her career.

Despite her history of success against Boulter, Stearns is going to face a steep challenge from the visitor as she tries to match last year's result in Miami when she finished in the second round.
