Sayaka Ishii hopes to introduce herself to the big league of the tour after receiving a well-deserved WTA 1000 main draw wildcard from the Miami Open.

Last October, she caused a mini sensation in Tokyo after defeating Clara Tauson and Zeynep Sonmez on her way to the quarterfinal of the WTA 500 tournament.

In fact, Ishii has been to over a dozen quarterfinals of all sorts since the start of the 2024 season, including at W75 Trnava just before coming to Miami, and risen as high as No. 188 in the rankings.

It might be, however, too soon for Ishii to cause a major stir in Miami and she is unlikely to score her first career win on tour outside her home country.

Emma Raducanu's struggles have continued in 2025, with just one match win in five tournaments after the Australian Open.

She was last seen losing in the Indian Wells opening round to Moyuka Uchijima in straight sets, and is about to meet a Japanese player for the second event in a row.

Despite her recent form, the Briton can take confidence from her remarkable rise last season, where she climbed from No. 303 in April to finishing inside the top-60 by the end of the year.

Raducanu reached at least the quarterfinals of Seoul, Washington DC, Eastbourne, Nottingham, and Stuttgart in the previous season.

She is yet to win a match at the Miami Open after losing to Katerina Siniakova and Bianca Andreescu in past bids, but is strongly backed to secure that maiden scalp on her third attempt.
