With all the emotions surrounding Richard Gasquet's final appearance at the Monte Carlo Masters, things got extremely tricky, tense, and sweaty for Daniel Altmaier.

However, he managed to stay composed, overcame a second-set collapse, and finished the job in three sets.

With four straight wins as a qualifier during this Monte Carlo Masters run, Altmaier finally pushed his season win-loss record into the positive at 14 wins and 13 losses.

He had gone winless in three consecutive matches before arriving in Monte Carlo.

This marks only the German's third time reaching the round of 16 at a Masters-level event. His record at this stage now stands at one win and one loss.

He defeated Jaume Munar in the round of 16 at the Madrid Masters in 2023 but was later stopped by top-10 player Holger Rune in the same round at Paris that year.

Altmaier had built an impressive 4–2 record against top-10 players, but that stat has taken a hit. After suffering three straight losses to top-10 opponents recently, his record now stands at 4–5.

Playing his first match at the Monte Carlo Masters since 2022 and still searching for his first win at this venue, Carlos Alcaraz made a rusty start against the in-form Francisco Cerundolo.

He squandered an early break and dropped the first set, but once he found his rhythm in the second, it was completely one-sided, a dominant display of his clay-court talent. Final score: 3-6, 6-0, 6-1.

The fact that Alcaraz did not compete at Monte Carlo last year works in his favor now, as he looks to collect valuable ranking points and close the gap on Jannik Sinner before the Italian returns from suspension later this month.

Last year, Alcaraz played only two clay tournaments. He reached the quarterfinals in both, losing to Andrey Rublev in Madrid and going on to win the French Open.

There is no doubt that Alcaraz is currently the most dominant clay-court player on tour. Since the start of the 2022 season, he has failed to reach at least the quarterfinal stage on clay only twice.

The first was here in Monte Carlo, where he lost in the opening round to Sebastian Korda in 2022. The second was a surprising defeat to Fabian Marozsan in the third round at Rome in 2023.
