Daniil Medvedev vs Alexandre Muller Preview

Daniil Medvedev was cramping towards the end of his first-round match on Monday, so it remains to be seen whether he can fully recover from those physical issues and perform at his best here.

It has already been a tough year for him, one that has drained much of his confidence. Given that, and considering clay is his least favourite surface, if he is not at full physical strength, there is a real chance he could fall victim to an upset.

Daniil Medvedev had a rough time in his first-round match earlier this week, nearly putting his entire tournament campaign in jeopardy.

He was in a strong position to secure a routine win over fellow Russian Karen Khachanov, especially after taking a 4-1 lead in the second set.

Instead, he let the opportunity slip and ended up in a gruelling battle that went to a deciding set and lasted nearly three hours.

That lack of efficiency came at a cost, as he looked completely drained towards the end of the match, even dealing with cramps and a noticeable limp.

Recovery will be crucial for Medvedev heading into his second-round match.

Fortunately, he had a day off between the two rounds, and how well he has bounced back physically from that demanding match will play a big role in determining his chances on Wednesday.

Medvedev has made it clear he is not a fan of playing on clay and has voiced his dislike for the surface more than once.

Surprisingly though, he has managed some solid results in Monte Carlo despite it being one of the most challenging clay events for his game.

He reached his first Masters quarterfinal and semifinal here in 2019, repeated that performance in 2023, and has made it to at least the round of 16 in each of his last three appearances at this tournament.

While the first four months of the year have been filled with frustration, disappointment, and setbacks for Daniil Medvedev, things have been quite the opposite for Alexandre Muller.

Muller has simply been enjoying his time on court in 2025. He began the season with the goal of staying inside the top 100, but quickly surpassed expectations and climbed into the top 50.

His rapid rise was fuelled by a strong start to the season, which included winning his first career title in Hong Kong and finishing as the runner-up in Rio de Janeiro.

Riding a wave of confidence and momentum, Muller got off to a solid start in his Monte Carlo Masters campaign, defeating clay specialist Camilo Ugo Carabelli in straight sets.

Now, he sets his sights on a rare top-20 victory. He has played top-20 opponents 15 times so far in his career, but has managed to win only twice.

One of those two wins came against a Russian player at a clay Masters event, when he defeated Andrey Rublev 3-6 6-3 6-2 at the Rome Masters in 2024.

Medvedev struggled with cramps late in his opener and may still be feeling the effects. With his confidence low and clay not suiting his game, he could be vulnerable to an early exit.

As mentioned, much depends on Medvedev’s physical condition. If fully recovered and at his best, he could win in straight sets. If not, he might just as easily lose 0–2.
