The Moselle Open tournament began back in 1980 and was played every second year until 1988. America’s Gene Mayer won the inaugural even against Italy’s Gianni Ocleppo. It did not form part of the ATP calendar in those days and thus received little support in the early years.

1988 was the last year it took place in that format. From 1989 to 2002 there was no Moselle Open but it resurfaced in 2003 and became part of the ATP 250 event on the ATP Tour calendar. It has always been a hard court tournament. The first two years after returning to the tennis calendar two Frenchman Arnaud Clement and Jerome Haehnel claimed the title.

The Moselle Open has seen some prestigious winners over the years including Novak Djokovic in 2006. French players have dominated the tournament, winning the Moselle Open nine times in the last 11 years.
