The first two editions of the Palermo Ladies Open in 1988 and 1989 were part of the Satellite Circuit. In 1990 the tournament became part of the WTA Tour.

The Palermo Ladies Open was categorised as a WTA Tier IV or Tier V event from 1990 to 2008. In 2009 the Palermo Ladies Open became an International Tournament and was contested until 2013.

In 2014 the license for the tennis tournament was sold to Kuala Lumpur's Malaysian Open and returned to Palermo in 2019 as a WTA Tour International event after a six-year absence.

The 2020 Palermo Ladies Open was the first tennis tournament to be played after the Covid-19 pandemic forced the ATP and WTA Tours to be suspended.
