The WTA Toray Pan Pacific Open first appeared in 1976 and has been ongoing ever since. It has been known by different names and formed played at different levels but has taken place every year. The tournament is now sponsored by Toray Industries and is played on outdoor hard court.
When it first took place in 1976 as the Sillhook Open in Tokyo it was played on indoor carpet surface. In fact it was mostly played on indoor carpet until 2008 when it moved to outdoor hard court. In 1982 it was named TV Tennis Open but the name changed again the following year in 1983 when it changed to the Queens Grand Prix.
In 1984 it was given the name Pan Pacific Open and has held that ever since, changing slightly based on sponsorship. The Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium was the venue for the competition while it was played on indoor carpet surface. When it moved to outdoor hard court in 2008 the Ariake Coliseum became the new venue.
From 1993 to 2008 it was classified as a Tier 1 tournament before becoming a Premier 5 tournament in 2009. It held that status for five years before being downgraded to a Premier tournament on the WTA calendar. China’s Wuhan Open took over as a replacement Premier 5 event.
